Number of Weight Loss Surgeries Increases

San Diego, CA (PRWeb) February 26, 2007 -- A recent study determined that more than 120,000 Americans had some form of weight loss surgery in 2004, compared to 13,386 in 1998. The study also cites an increase in the number of procedures preformed on middle-aged people. In addition, mortality rates have dropped nearly 80 percent since 1998.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 30 percent of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older are obese, which is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Approximately 65 percent of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older are either overweight or obese, defined as having a BMI of 25 or higher. Body mass index is a measure of body fat using a height to weight ratio that applies to both men and women.

For many people, gastric bypass surgery may be the most effective solution to long-lasting weight loss. Those who have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight and keep it off through other methods, such as reducing calorie intake and increasing exercise, may find lasting success with the surgery.

"We are happy to offer a long-term solution to an often persistent medical issue," said Eugene Rumsey, M.D., F.A.C.S., surgeon at Scripps Mercy Hospital and Pacific Bariatric Surgical Medical Group (http://www.pbsmg.com). "This safe and often permanent weight loss procedure has changed the lives of so many of our patients for the better."

Surgeons at Pacific Bariatric have performed more than 9,500 procedures on adult and adolescent patients at Scripps Mercy Hospital. As a result of outstanding aftercare programs and support groups, patients at Pacific Bariatric see a success rate of slightly higher than the national average.
